US R&D managers scan a resume for impact. A Chinese patent application shows them a legal document number, not a business achievement. When you write “CN103456789A — Method for preparing lithium battery cathode material,” the reader sees administrative detail. They are left to guess what it means.
Recruiters in the US expect a sentence that opens with a strong verb and closes with a quantified result. If your patent enabled a 12% yield improvement in a pilot line, that is the valid, resume-ready achievement — not the application number.
Drop the application number from the bullet point entirely. You can list granted US patents in a separate “Patents” section (titles only, no abstract). For a Chinese patent application that never granted in the US, your bullet should answer two questions: what technical problem did you solve, and what business outcome resulted?
“Filed Chinese patent application CN108765432A for intelligent welding defect detection system.”
“Designed a machine-vision welding defect detection system that reduced post-weld inspection rework by 23% in a high-volume battery module assembly line.”
The second version gives three proof points: the method (machine vision), the metric (23%), and the context (battery module assembly). A hiring manager in battery or automotive R&D instantly understands the value.
If your Chinese application issued as a US patent (e.g., after filing a PCT and entering the US national phase), list it in a brief “Patents” section near the bottom of the resume. Format:
U.S. Patent No. 11,234,567 — “Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode with Gradient Porosity,” issued March 2023.
Do not expand into technical background. Hiring managers who care about patents know how to look up the granting document. Your bullet points remain the primary place to show achievement.
If the application remains in Chinese prosecution or never entered the US phase, omit the patent reference from your resume entirely. The US hiring ecosystem cannot verify a live Chinese application, and the application number signals “not yet vetted by a patent office.” Keep the technical project description as a work achievement under the employer where you did the work.
“CN201910876543X — Process for synthesizing high-purity bisphenol A.”
“Developed a recrystallization process for bisphenol A that raised purity from 99.2% to 99.8% while cutting solvent usage by 15%, saving $180K/year in raw material costs at pilot scale.”
The after version converts a chemical process into a hiring manager language: purity improvement, cost saving, and scale.
