A Chinese National Scholarship (国家奖学金) is one of the most competitive undergraduate awards in China — roughly 0.2% of students receive it each year. But a US law school admissions officer reading "National Scholarship" alone may see a vague line, not a signal of elite performance. The problem is not the award itself; it is the missing context. US readers are accustomed to named scholarships (Rhodes, Fulbright, Truman) that carry instant prestige. Without a frame of reference, your award blends into a generic list.

Your task is to bridge that gap in one line — not a paragraph, not a separate document. A single parenthetical phrase or short descriptor can turn a head-scratcher into a standout credential.

The One Rule: Official Translation + One Context Phrase

Step 1: Use the official English name

The Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China publishes an official English version: "National Scholarship." Do not invent a translation like "China State Scholarship" or "PRC Merit Award." Stick with the approved name so that any verification (if needed) is straightforward.

Step 2: Add a short context phrase — exactly one

Pick one quantifiable fact that explains the award's selectivity. The strongest options are:

• Percentage: "awarded to top 0.2% of undergraduates nationally"
• Rank: "top 1 in my university cohort of 4,000"
• Number of recipients: "one of 50 recipients among 30,000 engineering students nationwide"

Do not list every statistic. One precise number is memorable; three numbers are noise.

After (clear and compelling): National Scholarship (top 0.2% of undergraduates nationally, Ministry of Education, China)

Notice the difference: the second version answers the immediate question any admissions reader has — "How impressive is this?" — without forcing them to Google.

Where to Place It on Your Law School Resume

The Honors & Awards section

This is the natural home for scholarships. Structure it like this:

HONORS & AWARDS National Scholarship (top 0.2% nationally), Ministry of Education, China | 2022 Dean's List, Peking University School of Law | 2021, 2022

If you have other awards (e.g., Moot Court Champion, Dean's List), list them in descending order of prestige. The National Scholarship should usually appear first if it is your most selective honor.

One resume formatting rule for ATS compatibility

Use a standard reverse-chronological layout with section headers in bold or all caps (not graphics). ATS systems — the software law schools and law firms use to parse resumes — read left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Do not place your National Scholarship inside a two-column layout or a sidebar. Keep it in the main body column. This ensures that parsing tools extract the full line, including your context phrase, without splitting it across columns.

What NOT to Do

• Do not explain the scholarship in a bullet point under Education. Your Education section should list your degree, institution, and dates. The scholarship belongs in its own section. Mixing them dilutes both.
• Do not include the monetary amount. "¥8,000 RMB" means nothing to a US reader and can seem like you are bragging about money rather than merit.
• Do not write a separate paragraph about the scholarship. Your resume is a scannable document, not a narrative. One line is enough.
• Do not use a vague phrase like "awarded by the Chinese government." It is technically true but too generic. The selectivity number is what makes it stick.

One Real Example (Law School Applicant)

A former client, a Peking University law graduate applying to US JD programs, originally wrote:

• Peking University Academic Excellence Award

After revision, the line became:

HONORS & AWARDS

• National Scholarship (top 0.2% of 30,000 candidates nationally), Ministry of Education, China | 2021
• Academic Excellence Award (top 5%), Peking University School of Law | 2020

She received interview invitations from three T14 law schools. The scholarship line was cited by one admissions dean as "clearly one of the most competitive awards in your file."

ATS Formatting Fact You Can Use

Most law schools use centralized application systems (LSAC) that convert your uploaded PDF to plain text for keyword search. If your scholarship context phrase is separated by a colon, dash, or parentheses, the ATS will still read it — as long as it is on the same line. Do not break the context phrase onto a second line.
