Why US biotech hiring managers value Chinese patents

Biotech is global. A Chinese patent co-inventor role signals that you contributed to a formal protection of intellectual property — something every biotech firm understands and respects. Hiring managers are not looking for US-specific patent experience unless the job explicitly requires it. They want evidence that you can do the work, that your research was novel enough to be patented, and that you collaborated within a team.

Your Chinese patent is not a liability. It is proof of capability. The only translation mistake candidates make is adding fake equivalents (e.g., rewriting the patent number to look like a US number) or omitting the patent entirely because they think it "doesn't count." Both hurt you.

What changed: The "after" version names the patent, quantifies the result, names your specific contribution, and adds the context line. It does not pretend the patent is US-based.

For a standard one-page biotech resume

Place the patent in a short "Patents" section after your publications or research experience. Use the same heading style as your other sections. Keep the entry to 2-3 lines.

Formatting tip for ATS compatibility

Use a single-column layout. Do not use tables, columns, or text boxes for patent entries — a simple bullet list or an indented block works. The ATS parser can read "CN103456789A" as plain text; it will not confuse it with a phone number or date if you label it clearly as "Patent Number."

A short checklist for formatting your patent on an English resume

• Use bold or italic for the patent title only — do not bold the patent number.
• Always include the full patent number. Abbreviations like "CN Pat." alone are unclear.
• If you have multiple Chinese patents, list them in reverse chronological order.
• Do not translate the patent title unless the original title was in Chinese — if it was, provide an English translation in parentheses.
• Keep the entry to 3 lines maximum. Biotech resumes are dense; a patent entry should not dominate the page.
