Never mention the cancellation. The reader only cares about what you did—the scope, the skills, and the concrete outputs you controlled. If you say "project cancelled before launch," you invite the recruiter to wonder why it failed or whether you were part of the problem. Instead, describe the work as if you are still proud of it, because you should be.
Three facts to keep in mind:
Before (mentions cancellation): Project lead for a mobile app that was cancelled before launch. Coordinated with 4 developers and 2 designers.
After (focuses on work): Led cross-functional development of a mobile app across 4 engineers and 2 designers, delivering 100% of feature specs and passing QA gate for 12 user stories before project pause.
The second version tells a complete story of scoping, coordination, and delivery. The word "pause" replaces "cancelled"—it is honest and neutral, and it implies the work was good enough to stop only due to external factors.
If the project was your sole responsibility for a period, keep the role title and dates exactly as they appear. Never add a note like "(project ended)" in the title line—leave that interpretation to the reader. Your job title is what your manager called it, and your dates are the months you worked. That is all the ATS or a human needs.

The last bullet shows that your work had lasting value beyond the project. That is a powerful signal: your contribution was good enough to be reused.
ATS parsers look for the job title, company name, and dates in predictable locations. If you list a cancelled project as its own "job" (like a contract role), keep the same format: left-aligned, title first, then company/project name, then dates. Do not use parentheses around the project name or date range. ATS systems often misread the "project" keyword and drop it into a skills bucket if you are not careful. To prevent this, always include a real company or department name alongside the project name—even if the company is your own startup or a client. Example:
Lead Engineer | XYZ Corp, Internal Wallet Project | 2022 – 2023
The parser sees "Lead Engineer" as title and "XYZ Corp" as employer. The project name is just context.
There are two honest exceptions. First, if you worked on the project for less than 2 months and have 5+ other relevant roles to fill the page—leave it out to avoid a too-short tenure with no output. Second, if your entire contribution was attending meetings and the project never reached a build phase—that does not demonstrate a skill, and it will dilute your resume. In either case, the rule is simple: if the bullet cannot contain a verb + deliverable, skip it.
