Rewrite your self-employment as a position at a company you founded, with you as an employee of that company. This does not mean lying — it means presenting the same facts in a format recruiters already trust.

If you had dozens of small projects, you cannot list each one individually. Group them by type or by industry.

This format works for any industry — software development, coaching, writing, trades. The key is giving each bullet a client count, a measurable outcome, or a process improvement.
Applicant Tracking Systems parse your resume by looking for predictable sections. The most common parsing error for self-employed resumes happens when the job title, employer, and dates are crammed into the same line without clear separators.

A gap of three months or less can be ignored entirely. Longer gaps belong on the resume only if you can explain them with something productive: a certification, travel, or focused skill-building.
