The 1 Rule: Leave the Gap Off Your Resume Entirely

Your resume is a marketing document, not a legal timeline. US employers hiring on OPT know that USCIS processing takes 2-6 weeks (sometimes longer). Checking the "legally authorized to work" box on the application is all they need. Listing "Awaiting EAD" or "OPT pending" on your resume signals inexperience and wastes prime real estate.

The exception: If a recruiter directly asks in an interview why you didn't start earlier, say: "My EAD was approved in [month], and I was ready to start immediately." That is one sentence. It is never a resume bullet point.

Why Recruiters Already Ignore the Gap

A 3-month gap after graduation is the single most common resume period for international students in the US. Here is why hiring managers do not flag it:

• The timeline is predictable. Every US employer who has hired an F-1 student knows EADs arrive 2-3 months after the application window. It is a known, boring delay.

How to Date Your Degree and Experience Correctly

Follow this exact format to keep your resume clean:

Education Section:

• University of California, Berkeley — M.S. in Statistics
• 2021 – 2023

Not:

• M.S. in Statistics (Graduated May 2023)

Work Experience (if you had a prior internship or role before the gap):

• Data Analyst Intern | Company X | Summer 2022

If you start a job after EAD approval in August 2023, list it as:

• Data Scientist | Company Y | August 2023 – Present

The gap between May and August is invisible. The resume shows an unbroken sequence: education ended in 2023, employment began in 2023.

One Exception for Cover Letters

If you are writing a cover letter for a role that starts in June but you cannot begin until August, mention your EAD timeline in the closing paragraph. Example: "I hold OPT authorization and expect my EAD by August. I am available for a late-summer start." Still never mention it on the resume itself.

Common Mistake: Over-Explaining in a Summary or Bullet

Do not write this:

• "Recent graduate awaiting OPT EAD approval, available to start in August"
• "Pending work authorization — I-765 receipt on file"

The second version gives the recruiter a reason to want you. The first version gives them a reason to worry about a process that has nothing to do with your ability to do the job.

When your resume is scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS), the software looks for date ranges in the Education field. Most systems expect a start year and an end year (e.g., 2021-2023). Adding a third date entry like "OPT pending" confuses the parser and can cause your degree to be extracted incorrectly. Stick to the standard format: institution name, degree, year range.
