Should You Include a Foreign Grade? The Short Answer

French universities grade on a scale of 0 to 20, with 10 as the minimum pass and 16–20 considered "Très Bien." US recruiters will not know a 14 from a 16. Convert as follows:

• 16–20 → 4.0 (Très Bien — excellent)
• 14–15.9 → 3.3–3.6 (Bien — good)
• 12–13.9 → 2.7–3.2 (Assez Bien — satisfactory)
• 10–11.9 → 2.0–2.6 (Passable — consider omitting if below 3.0)

The Netherlands uses a 1–10 scale, with 6 as a pass and 8+ being excellent. Top students reach 8.5–9.0. Mapping:

• 9.0–10.0 → 4.0 (Outstanding)
• 8.0–8.9 → 3.7–4.0 (Very good)
• 7.0–7.9 → 3.0–3.6 (Good)

How ATS Handles European Degree Listings

Applicant Tracking Systems do not care about the original grading scale — they only parse what you type. If you write "German grade: 1.5" with no context, the system sees a number and may treat it as a GPA out of 4.0, which would look perfect (1.5 → misinterpreted as a very low NL GPA!). The same can happen with a French "14/20" — ATS might read "14" as a GPA, which would be absurdly high.

To avoid ATS misinterpretation:

• Always write "GPA Equivalent" or "US GPA Equivalent:" before your numeric translation.
• Keep the foreign grade in parentheses after the converted one — that way a human reader sees context, but a machine only sees the US-format GPA.
• Use the same date format (Month Year) as US resumes. European dd/mm/yyyy can confuse ATS sorters that expect mm/dd/yyyy.
