Your old resume listed tasks you completed alone. For a management role, you need to show influence through others. Replace "I built the Q3 report" with "Led a team of 3 analysts to deliver weekly sales reports, improving data accuracy by 20%."
Before (individual contributor):
After (demonstrates leadership):
Notice the before version describes a task you did alone. The after version names your direct reports, the system you implemented, and the measurable result.
You may not have had a "manager" title yet, but you likely demonstrated leadership. Look for these hidden experiences:
Use these stronger verbs: Led, directed, supervised, coached, mentored, managed, coordinated, facilitated, trained, delegated, aligned. Avoid helped, assisted, supported — those neutralize your role.
An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) scans for job titles, skills, and keywords before a human ever sees your resume. Follow these rules:
Scan the job description for 3-5 repeated skills or phrases. Example: If the ad says "needs to manage a team of 5" and "performance reviews," work those exact phrases into your bullets. Write "Conducted quarterly performance reviews for a team of 5 customer service reps."
For your first management role, a chronological resume is almost always better. Here’s why:
Functional resumes (grouped by skill, not timeline) are often rejected by ATS and by hiring managers who want to see career progression. If you have no management title, stick with a chronological format that shows increasing responsibility at each job.

Work Experience Senior Coordinator, ABC Company | 2021–Present
Coordinator, ABC Company | 2019–2021
This format clearly shows you progressed from doing tasks to leading people.
After your work experience, add a simple "Skills" section with a short list. This helps ATS and gives hiring managers a quick reference.
Do not go overboard — 6–8 total skills is fine. Only include those you can actually discuss in an interview.
Before you submit, read every bullet aloud. If a sentence starts with "Responsible for" or "Duties included," delete it and start with a strong action verb. If you hear filler, cut it. Your resume should sound confident and direct.
