When you switch from an academic program (F-1 OPT/CPT) to full-time H-1B or green card employment, a resume gap is not your real problem. The real problem is ambiguity. A recruiter reading "Software Engineer Intern, June–August 2023" sees a standard internship. But if your next entry says "Software Engineer, September 2023–Present" and that overlaps with your graduation date, they will ask: Were you authorized to work that whole time?
U.S. employers who sponsor visas are trained to spot authorization gaps. A one-week CPT gap after graduation can kill an offer if the resume leaves the timeline unclear. The fix is not to fudge dates — it is to be transparent in a way that signals compliance.
Do not hide your CPT authorization in a cover letter or a separate "Visa Status" section. Embed it directly into the work experience entry where the recruiter reads dates.
Before (ambiguous):
Software Engineer Intern | ABC Tech, San Francisco, CA
June 2023 – August 2023
After (clear and compliant):
Software Engineer (CPT Authorized) | ABC Tech, San Francisco, CA
June 2023 – August 2023
This tells the recruiter three things at a glance: (1) the role was legally authorized, (2) you were enrolled in a degree program at the time, and (3) there is no hidden gap or unauthorized work.
Do not use vague labels like "Work Authorization: F-1" — that is too broad. Be specific to the authorization type.
A CPT gap usually happens between the end of CPT and the start of H-1B or OPT. Here is the correct way to show that on a resume:
The two-month gap is not hidden. The recruiter sees it and understands it as a natural transition between authorization periods. If the gap was longer (e.g., 3+ months), you can add a short note: "Transition from CPT to OPT — authorized for work from [date]."
Important: Do not extend the CPT end date to cover the gap. That is misrepresentation and can lead to visa denial or rescinded offers.
Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) parse date fields and job titles first. If your CPT label is buried in a bullet point, the ATS may not associate it with the job entry. Follow these formatting rules:
One ATS fact: Most modern ATS (Greenhouse, Lever, Workday) will index the first line of each job entry as the title. If you write "Software Engineer Intern | ABC Tech | CPT Authorized" on the same line, the ATS sees the title as a whole string. That is fine. But if you put "CPT Authorized" on a separate line below the dates, it may be treated as a separate field and ignored by the parser.
Unpaid CPT or remote work for a U.S. company still counts as valid experience. Label it the same way: "Marketing Intern (CPT Authorized — Unpaid)" or "Data Analyst (CPT Authorized — Remote)". The key is honesty. Do not omit the role just because it was unpaid — recruiters value the skills, and the authorization label removes doubt.
No. Even with clear dates, a recruiter who is not familiar with F-1 rules may assume you worked without authorization. The label "CPT Authorized" is a signal that you understand U.S. immigration compliance — it works in your favor.
Do not leave it off. A one-week gap is normal and expected. Simply list both roles with their actual dates. Recruiters will not ask about a one-week gap if the authorization labels are present.
Put it on the resume first. A cover letter is optional and may not be read. The resume must stand alone. If you also write a cover letter, you can briefly mention the transition, but do not rely on it to clarify authorization.
If the startup had a valid SEVIS-approved CPT agreement with your university, it is still CPT-authorized work. List it normally with the label. If the startup did not follow CPT rules, do not list that work at all — listing unauthorized work is a violation that can affect your immigration status.
