When a recruiter sees six different companies in three years, they assume you quit quickly or got fired. But many of those entries are actually short-term contracts from one staffing agency. The fix is simple: group them so the timeline looks intentional, not chaotic.
Contract-to-hire roles (also called temp-to-perm or temp-to-direct) start as temporary assignments through an agency. You work for Company A, but the staffing agency is your legal employer. If you list Company A as a standalone entry for three months, then Company B for four months, you look like a flight risk—even if you stayed with the agency the whole time.
Always list the staffing agency as your employer, with the client name in parentheses or after a dash. This shows you had consistent employment, not a series of short gigs.
Example (before – looks like job hopping):
Example (after – shows stability):
If you started as a contract and then got hired permanently by the same client, list the client as employer for the combined period. Under dates, write:
This tells the recruiter exactly what happened: the contract was part of the transition, not a failed job.
Most bullet points fail because they list tasks, not the breadth of the contract. A staffing role often spans multiple projects—lean into that.
Generic (weak):
Specific (shows growth):
The second version emphasizes continuity and skill-building, not short stints.
Before you submit your resume, run this checklist:
Most ATS systems (like Taleo and Greenhouse) parse dates from the employer name line. They treat “Jan 2023–Oct 2023” as continuous employment, even if the parentheses mention multiple clients. The key is keeping dates consistent with the agency—not the client.
Yes. Once you become a permanent employee of the client, you can list them as your sole employer. Write “Hired after 3-month contract-to-hire” in the title or notes.
Group each agency separately. List Agency A with its client assignments, then Agency B separately. Never mix dates from different agencies in one entry.
Yes. A known agency like Robert Half or Randstad adds credibility. If the agency is unknown, still list it—the legal employer matters more than brand recognition.
Say: “I preferred contract work for the variety and skill-building, and it allowed me to choose roles that matched my expertise.” Stress that you chose the structure, not that you were unhirable.
