A Chinese state-owned enterprise (SOE) internship can be a hidden asset — but only if you frame it correctly. In the US, marketing hiring managers scan for business impact: revenue influenced, campaigns launched, user growth driven. An SOE resume entry that reads “Assisted with government relations activities” or “Supported internal documentation workflows” will be skipped in seconds.
The fix is not to lie. It is to translate the SOE context into the commercial language of US marketing. Every bullet must answer: “What measurable result did you produce?”
For every bullet point, include at least one specific number that reflects a business outcome — not a process. “Improved brand awareness” becomes “Led 3 social media campaigns that increased WeChat follower engagement by 40% over 6 months.” The number proves you understand what marketerrs call key performance indicators (KPIs).
Do not use the direct translation of your SOE title — e.g., “Assistant of External Affairs Division Level 2.” That title means nothing to a US recruiter. Replace it with a standard US marketing equivalent such as:
This is acceptable as long as the underlying duties match. A US recruiter expects familiar hierarchy labels.
Add a short parenthetical or footnote that clarifies the SOE’s market role. Example:
China National Petroleum Corporation (SOE – one of China’s top 5 oil & gas conglomerates, 500,000+ employees)
This gives the reader immediate context without forcing them to Google a Chinese name.
Here is a before/after rewrite that transforms a generic SOE internship into a US-marketing-ready bullet.
Before (common original wording):
After (US marketing rewrite with metrics):
The rewrite replaces process words (“participated,” “assisted,” “coordinated”) with action verbs and concrete outcomes. Each bullet now includes a number and a result a marketing manager can evaluate. The numbers do not need to be huge — they just need to be specific and honest.
A common mistake is preserving the dense, multi-column layout common in Chinese resume formats. US applicant tracking systems (ATS) — such as Workday or Taleo — parse best with a single-column, left-aligned design. Use a standard 10-12 pt sans-serif font (Arial, Calibri). Save as .docx unless the job posting specifically requests .pdf.
ATS software typically ignores images and graphics. If your original Chinese resume includes a photo, QR code, or decorative border, remove them. The same rule applies to tables — use simple horizontal spacing instead. These edits keep your content machine-readable.
US marketing resumes prioritize recent, relevant experience. Lead with a Summary (2-3 sentences mentioning your top metric achievement), then Professional Experience (reverse chronological). Place education after experience unless you are currently a student.
For the SOE internship, list it under Professional Experience, not a separate “International Experience” section. Treat it as a standard marketing entry. If you have other less relevant roles, either drop them or group them under “Earlier Experience” with minimal detail.
Marketing Intern | China National Petroleum Corporation (SOE) | Beijing, China June 2023 – August 2023
This entry is short, metric-heavy, and immediately understandable to a US recruiter. It shows digital marketing, data analysis, and cross-team coordination — all prized in US marketing roles.
