Why Raw Chinese GPAs Confuse US Employers

US hiring managers and recruiters expect a 4.0 scale. A 3.5 on a 4.3 scale looks like a 3.5 on a 4.0 — but it’s actually closer to a 3.26. A 4.0 on a 5.0 scale suggests a perfect student, but it’s really a B+ average.

Listing the raw number without context creates false impressions. Worse, it can break ATS software that scans for a 4.0-scale GPA. If the system sees a 4.3, it may flag the resume as non-standard or simply ignore the number.

The Conversion Rule: Always Use a 4.0 Scale

For US resumes, convert your GPA using the standard formula:

Formula: (Your GPA ÷ Maximum Scale) × 4.0 = Converted GPA on 4.0 Scale

Rounding rule: Round to two decimal places. Never round up aggressively — a 3.26 stays 3.26, not 3.3.

When to Include (and When to Omit) Your GPA

Include if: Your converted GPA is 3.0 or higher. That’s the threshold most US employers consider competitive.

Omit if: Your converted GPA is below 3.0. Instead, highlight your major GPA if it’s stronger (e.g., “Major GPA: 3.4/4.0”). Or skip GPA entirely and lead with projects, internships, or certifications.

Before (raw, outdated):

• B.S. Computer Science, Tsinghua University, GPA: 3.8/4.3

After (converted, US-ready):

One precise ATS fact: Most ATS systems parse GPA when it appears as “GPA: X.XX/4.0” in the education section. To guarantee parsing, follow this format:

• Correct: GPA: 3.54/4.0
• Avoid: “GPA: 3.54 (on a 4.0 scale)” — parentheticals sometimes cause parsing errors.
• Avoid: “3.54/4.0” without “GPA:” — the system may not recognize it as a GPA.

Place the GPA on the same line as your degree or immediately below it. Keep it in a standard font (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman) at 10–12 pt. No boxes, no tables.
