Most job seekers treat their project section like a portfolio blurb: "Developed a customer portal using React and Node.js." That’s a description, not a resume line. An automated screener looks for the same signals it expects in your experience section—clear role indicators, quantified results, and specific technical keywords.
When a screener hits a project that reads like a textbook table of contents, it sees zero evidence that you owned the work or produced a tangible outcome. The result: the project is ignored, and your resume loses a critical keyword density boost.
Start each line with an action verb (e.g., "Architected," "Automated," "Reduced") followed by the measurable impact. For example:
Before: "Created a data pipeline for processing customer feedback."
After: "Reduced manual analysis by 40% through an automated NLP pipeline that summarized 10,000 daily customer feedback entries."
The second version passes the screener because it contains a quantified outcome (40%), a key verb (Reduced), and relevant keyword density (NLP, automated).
Never hide the tech stack in a separate sentence or a bullet at the end. Integrate it into the action line. ATS systems give weight to words that appear near action verbs, not in a comma-mess at the bottom.
Weak: "Developed a real-time dashboard. Tools used: AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, Python, and Chart.js."
Strong: "Built a real-time AWS Lambda-driven dashboard (Python, DynamoDB, Chart.js) that updated sales data every 5 seconds for a 200-person team."
Each project entry should mirror your job bullets: role-context → action → result. A screener expects consistency. If your experience section uses bold job titles and bulleted statements, your projects should too.
Here is a full project entry written two ways. The first way will confuse an ATS; the second will survive screening.
Before (screener-unfriendly):
Mobile App for Task Management
Built a cross-platform app with Flutter and Firebase. Users can create tasks, set reminders, and share lists. Worked on front-end and back-end integration.
After (screener-friendly):
Task Manager Mobile App
Notice the after version uses three separate bullets, each with a distinct verb, metric, and keyword. The before version is a single paragraph with no measurable outcome and no clear ownership.
Use this checklist before you submit your resume. Each project entry must have:
If any project entry lacks one of these, rewrite it before you upload the file.
Most ATS systems—including Taleo, Workday, and Lever—parse project sections by looking for the heading "Projects" or "Selected Projects" followed by a bulleted list. If you use a table, multi-column layout, or a graphic-heavy design, the system may skip the entire block. Keep it simple: a single-column, left-aligned list under a plain-text heading.
For the best parsing results, use a standard font (Arial, Calibri, Garamond), 10-12 pt text, and 0.5-inch margins. Files should be saved as .docx (not .pdf) for maximum compatibility with legacy systems.
Only add it if the projects demonstrate skills not reflected in your job history—like a side project using a newer tool or a high-impact academic capstone. Otherwise, it wastes space that could hold achievement bullets in experience.
After your experience section and before your education. Screeners process sections in order, so keep your most relevant work history first. If you have no work experience, place projects before education.
Yes, but rewrite the bullets to emphasize keywords from the job description for each application. The core outcome stays the same, but the tools and verbs shift to match the role you want.
Include 2-4 at most. Any more than four and the section becomes a list, which dilutes the impact of each entry. Choose the projects most relevant to the target job.
